1. Cation Exchange Process
Hard raw water passes through a packed bed of high-capacity strong-acid cation exchange resin. The calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) and magnesium ($Mg^{2+}$) ions responsible for water hardness are selectively exchanged with sodium ($Na^+$) ions present on the resin matrix, significantly reducing total hardness and preventing scale deposition downstream.
2. Salt / Brine Regeneration
Once the resin bed becomes exhausted with calcium and magnesium ions, the system undergoes periodic regeneration using a concentrated sodium chloride (salt/brine) solution. The high concentration of sodium ions displaces accumulated hardness ions to drain, fully restoring resin softening capacity for continuous operation.
